Red Helix, a market leader in cyber security and network performance, has appointed highly experienced military risk management expert, Tom Exelby, as its new Head of Cyber Security.

Exelby joins Red Helix after 15 years in the British Army as an officer in the Royal Engineers where he delivered security and risk management consultancy services and managed risk in life-threatening situations. He has extensive experience in strategic planning and leadership, having spearheaded operational deployments with teams of up to 90 personnel and held senior roles in bomb disposal, NATO and procurement.

As Head of Cyber Security, Exelby will oversee delivery of efficient and effective cyber security solutions to provide enterprise-grade protection to mid-sized businesses across the UK. His approach will maintain a strong focus on business outcomes, aligning security strategies with the broader goals of each company.

Exelby says: “There has never been greater urgency for more advanced cyber security. As organisations adopt AI, they must also keep pace with fast-evolving criminal tactics and navigate complex regulations such as the EU’s NIS2 directive. These challenges are all critical for businesses and I’m committed to raising awareness around them. I will use my experience of leadership and problem-solving in adversarial environments to address the cyber challenges of Red Helix’s diverse range of customers. I look forward to helping companies embed the right culture, build the right foundations, and better understand and manage cyber risks effectively.”

Marion Stewart, CEO at Red Helix, said: “We are incredibly excited to have Tom on board. His extensive background in risk management and unique leadership experience will be invaluable in driving forward our cyber security strategy and enhancing our presence in the sector.”

The former Royal Engineers officer’s wide variety of demanding roles have included strategy and planning for the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps at NATO headquarters, along with change management and project leadership. As Officer Commanding 15 Field Squadron, Exelby delivered counter-explosive hazard advice and comprehensive risk management. He combines this military experience with academic qualifications in internet computing and leadership and strategy.
